  • Rahul Gandhi, citizenship, Allahabad High Court, UK citizenship

The Allahabad High Court has directed Additional Solicitor General (ASG) S.B. Pandey to seek instructions from the Ministry of Home Affairs and submit a response regarding the citizenship petition involving Rahul Gandhi by December 19, 2024. The matter was adjourned for hearing in the week beginning December 19, with the Court urging the government to present its findings on the issue.

This follows a previous petition filed by S. Vignesh Shishir, a resident of Karnataka, who had previously withdrawn a similar petition in July 2024. After withdrawing, Shishir submitted two representations to the Union Home Ministry but is now seeking a decision on his request. He has asked the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to probe Rahul Gandhi’s citizenship, claiming that the UK government has confirmed Gandhi’s name is listed in their citizenship records.

Shishir emphasized in an NDTV interview that according to Indian laws, dual citizenship is not permitted, and any individual who acquires the citizenship of another country automatically loses Indian citizenship. He has presented documentation to the court supporting this claim.
