- Manipur, N Biren Singh, Manipur conflict resolution
Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh expressed regret for the ethnic violence that has plagued the northeastern state since May 2023. In a heartfelt apology, Singh acknowledged the lives lost and the displacement of many people due to the ongoing clashes. He emphasized the need for reconciliation and healing among the state's diverse communities, particularly between the Meitei and Kuki tribes. Despite the challenges, he expressed optimism for the future, stating that peace and normalcy could be restored by 2025. The CM urged all 35 tribes in Manipur to forgive the past and work together for a peaceful and prosperous future.
The violence erupted after the Meitei community's demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status, which was opposed by the Kuki and other tribal communities. The ethnic conflict has resulted in over 180 deaths and widespread destruction, with many families being displaced from their homes. The Chief Minister's statement comes as signs of progress towards peace are emerging in recent months, and he remains hopeful for a positive change in the coming year.
