The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has officially appointed Jasprit Bumrah as the vice-captain of the Indian Test team ahead of the series against New Zealand, while Rohit Sharma retains his role as captain. Bumrah, recognized as one of India's most vital players, has been integrated into the leadership group, even though he has limited captaincy experience.

In a press conference before the first Test, Rohit Sharma spoke highly of Bumrah’s tactical understanding and ability to contribute during matches. "Bumrah has played a lot of cricket and has a good head on his shoulders. He understands the game well," Rohit stated, emphasizing that despite Bumrah’s minimal captaincy experience, his insights have always been valuable to the team.

Rohit acknowledged that Bumrah has captained only one Test and a few T20 matches, but his experience and understanding of the game position him as a leader during critical moments. "When you are in a situation where you need a leader to step up, Bumrah will be one of them," Rohit added, affirming that Bumrah has consistently been part of the leadership group.

As the most experienced fast bowler in the squad, Bumrah has also been entrusted with mentoring younger bowlers, helping them adapt to the team's strategies. Rohit mentioned that Bumrah's involvement in internal discussions and his guidance to new bowlers are crucial for the team's progress.

Rohit also addressed the potential return of Mohammed Shami, Bumrah’s pace bowling partner, but indicated that Shami's fitness for the upcoming Australia tour remains uncertain. "It's pretty difficult for us to make a call on him right now. He had swelling on his knee, which has set him back in his recovery," Rohit explained.

With the Test series against New Zealand on the horizon, the appointment of Bumrah as vice-captain signals BCCI's confidence in his leadership abilities, while Rohit Sharma continues to steer the team as captain.
