What began as a promising day for India quickly turned into a challenging outing during the third Test against New Zealand. After dismissing the visitors for 235 in their first innings, India found themselves in a precarious position at 86/4 by the end of Day 1.

India's bowlers shone, with Ravindra Jadeja achieving his 14th five-wicket haul and Washington Sundar claiming four wickets to dismantle New Zealand's batting lineup at Wankhede Stadium. However, India's batting faltered, losing key wickets in quick succession.

Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill provided a glimmer of hope with a solid half-century partnership for the second wicket. Jaiswal scored 30 off 52 balls, but his dismissal to Ajaz Patel, bowled while attempting a reverse sweep, marked the beginning of India’s troubles.

Things worsened when nightwatchman Mohammed Siraj was trapped LBW for a golden duck, followed by the shocking run out of Virat Kohli for just four runs. Kohli's dismissal in the last over of the day was particularly disheartening, as he was out in the final over of the previous Test as well. His run out, a first in a home Test, sparked widespread disappointment on social media.

At stumps, Shubman Gill was batting on 31 with Rishabh Pant on 1, as India struggled to maintain their footing. The day started well, with opener Rohit Sharma and Jaiswal surviving early pressure. Rohit, who scored 18 off 18 balls, fell victim to a catch off a thick edge, leaving India at 25/1.

Despite the absence of New Zealand’s injured players Tim Southee and Mitchell Santner, India could not capitalize on their early advantage, and as the day progressed, they found themselves digging a deeper hole.

As the team looks to regroup for Day 2, the focus will be on stabilizing the innings and building a competitive score to challenge New Zealand.
