Jennifer Winget has established herself as a versatile actress with roles in popular shows like Kasautii Zindagii Kay, Saraswatichandra, and Dill Mill Gayye, where she became a household name as Dr. Riddhima Gupta. Her portrayal of the enigmatic Maya in Beyhadh in 2016 earned her widespread acclaim and affection from fans. Currently, she’s enjoying the success of her latest OTT show, Raisinghani Vs Raisinghani, where she plays lawyer Anushka Raisinghani. In an exclusive chat with Filmfare, Winget discusses what excites her about her work, her views on love, and more.
What did you enjoy most about playing a lawyer on screen?
Every new character offers a learning experience. Playing Anushka taught me that kindness and softness do not signify weakness or incompetence. I admire Anushka’s quiet confidence and the balance she maintains in her life. And yes, the lawyer's robe suits me well!
You’re reuniting with Karan Wahi, whom fans loved in Dill Mill Gayye. Did you discover anything new about each other as actors?
Working with Karan has always been a pleasure. Since Dill Mill Gayye, we’ve both grown as actors and individuals, and our friendship has deepened. We’ve both wanted to collaborate again for a long time, and when this opportunity came, I was thrilled. Working with a friend makes the job much more enjoyable.
The love angle in the show isn’t portrayed as a fairytale romance. What’s your current perspective on romance and love?
The relationship between Virat and Anushka is imperfect, which adds to its realism. I believe the notion of a perfect partner or relationship is unrealistic. Expecting perfection from anyone, including yourself, leads to unnecessary pressure and eventual disappointment. For me, love is about being there for each other every day, regardless of life’s challenges, and navigating imperfections together.
What are the non-negotiable aspects for you in a relationship?
Trust is fundamental. Being able to trust your partner and being trustworthy yourself are crucial elements in any relationship.
You’ve mentioned feeling incomplete without acting. Can you elaborate?
Acting is my passion and creative outlet. It’s something I’m deeply committed to and enjoy immensely. While I take breaks between projects to recharge, I’m eager to explore producing and directing in the future. For now, acting remains where my heart is, allowing me to delve into various creative aspects while also taking necessary breaks.
You started your acting career quite young. How did you find your way into it?
The acting bug caught me early on. Though I didn’t study drama formally in school, a childhood movie role showed me the joy and fulfillment that acting brings. That passion has only intensified over the years, driving me to pursue a career in acting and continually enhance my craft.
What’s your view on giving love another chance?
My approach to love has always been personal, not influenced by others' perceptions. Over time, my understanding of love has evolved. It’s less about idealized notions and more about finding a deep, lasting connection with someone who stands by you through various phases of life.
You take breaks between projects. Do you ever worry about missing out on opportunities?
Taking time off before starting a new project is crucial for me. It helps me reset and return with renewed energy. I trust that what’s meant for me will come in due time.
How have you adapted to the OTT format, and what do you enjoy about it?
Transitioning from television, which involves tight deadlines and limited resources, to OTT has been refreshing. The OTT format provides more flexibility and a clearer narrative path, which enhances the overall experience and avoids monotony.
