About Vidushi. Sudha Ragunathan

One of India’s foremost Carnatic vocalists, Sudha Ragunathan is well-known for her
scintillating and full house concerts where the soul of her music lies in the dynamism of
her presentation.

A postgraduate in economics and a Fulbright scholar, Sudha is a student of the
legendary Dr. ML Vasanthakumari, being under the doyen’s tutelage for 13 yrs.
Sudha’s parents Venkataraman and Choodamani were very ardent devotees of
Bhagawan. When they had taken their infant third born to Bhagawan to seek His
blessings, it was Bhagawan who named the child Gita Sudha and prophesied that music
would be her calling. He also conducted her Aksharabyasam and Sudha feels His
presence and grace in her life every single day.

In her trailblazing journey, Sudha has received over 135 awards and titles and released
over 200 music albums. The Govt of India has honored her with the Padma Bhushan and
the Sangeet Natak Akademi awards. She is also the recipient of the ‘Sangita Kalanidhi’
from The Madras Music Academy, the State Government’s ‘Kalaimamani’ and a
noteworthy list of titles and Lifetime Achievement Awards from renowned institutions
across the world.

Sudha Ragunathan is the only Carnatic musician second to Bharat Ratna MS
Subbulakshmi, to have sung at the United Nations. Her music echoed in the hall of the
United Nations on 2nd October, 2016, the International Day of Non-Violence, 50 years after
Bharat Ratna MS Subbulakshmi’s music did in 1966.

On 2 February, 2020 Sudha Ragunathan led the largest Carnatic band of to acquire a
place in the Guinness Book of World Records.

Sudha’s participation in global music festivals is a standing example of the diversity of her
music. Film music and fusion music are also an important part of Sudha’s repertoire.
Sudhaarnava, Academy for Musical Excellence was launched by her with the objective
of training senior level students to produce high class performers and continue the legacy
of her guru.

Samudhaaya Foundation was launched in 1999 to serve society through her music. She
has gathered funds of over Rs. 6 crores and channelised them for the upliftment of the
underprivileged, especially women and children, in the areas of healthcare, education
and infrastructural aid.

In her role as a responsible citizen, Sudha Ragunathan is a Board Member in key
governing bodies such as the Central Advisory Board for Culture by the Government of
India, Kalakshetra Foundation, Chennai and President of the Global Carnatic Musicians
Association (GCMA), a world-wide organization for Carnatic musicians.
