- Virat Kohli, Sunil Gavaskar, Perth Test, Indian cricket
In the Perth Test, former India captain Sunil Gavaskar observed that a subtle adjustment in Virat Kohli's batting stance played a crucial role in his recovery of vintage form. After a lean period in international cricket, Kohli scored his 30th Test century, silencing critics who questioned his place in the team. Gavaskar noted that Kohli, who had struggled in the first innings, seemed more relaxed in the second, with a slight change in his stance—his legs positioned a bit wider, which gave him better height to deal with Australia's bouncy pitches.
Matthew Hayden, the former Australian cricketer, echoed Gavaskar's thoughts, explaining how being more upright in stance helped Kohli stay on top of the variable bounce. Kohli's ability to play late and with softer hands in the second innings allowed him to counter the aggressive off-stump line and short ball tactics of the Australian bowlers.
Gavaskar also compared Kohli's struggles to tennis legends like Federer, Nadal, and Djokovic, highlighting how even top players face periods of adjustment and criticism when they don’t score hundreds consistently. He emphasized that while Kohli's fans may expect centuries every time, even scores in the 70s and 80s are still valuable contributions.
