Microsoft 365 Renamed to Microsoft 365 Copilot
On January 15, 2025, Microsoft announced that it had renamed its 'Microsoft 365' application to 'Microsoft 365 Copilot.' This change reflects the integration of the AI-powered Copilot Chat feature within the app, enhancing its functionality for users across web, mobile (Android and iOS), and Windows systems.
Purpose of the Branding Change
The branding change aims to highlight the added capabilities provided by Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat. The AI tool assists users with tasks such as drafting documents, creating content, collaborating on tasks, and building agents with a work account. This integration brings AI-driven productivity enhancements to the app, streamlining user workflows.
Features and Functionality
The Microsoft 365 Copilot app is designed to provide users with easy access to several Microsoft 365 tools including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, PDFs, and more. It helps users manage and edit files, scan documents, and create content seamlessly. The integration of Copilot Chat enables additional support in completing these tasks.
Availability and Access
The app is available to users with Entra accounts (work or school), as well as personal Microsoft accounts. Users with a Microsoft 365 license or a Microsoft 365 Copilot license can access the Copilot Chat feature at no additional cost. The app’s new name and icon are now visible across web, mobile, and desktop platforms.
New Web URL and Branding Consistency
In alignment with Microsoft’s broader strategy for a unified cloud experience, the web URL for the app will now redirect to m365.cloud.microsoft. The previous URLs, office.com and microsoft365.com, will automatically redirect to the new domain. The rebranding ensures consistency across Microsoft's cloud applications.
Availability for Microsoft 365 Personal and Family Users
The Copilot Chat feature will soon be available for users with Microsoft 365 Personal and Family subscriptions, though it will be limited to primary account holders. However, users without these subscriptions will not have access to Copilot Chat.
Regions Without Copilot Access
In regions where Copilot is not yet available, the app will remove the Copilot tab from the Home screen on web, desktop, and mobile platforms. Despite this, the app’s new name and icon will remain as Microsoft 365 Copilot, maintaining branding consistency across all regions.
