The first day of the second Test between India and New Zealand was a crucial one for the home team, coming on the heels of a loss in the first Test. In a bid to maintain their impressive form, India made three key changes to their lineup, bringing in Washington Sundar, Shubman Gill, and Akash Deep. Former Indian captain Sunil Gavaskar commented on the changes, noting, "I don't see a lot of teams making three changes unless there are injury concerns. Washington Sundar's inclusion suggests they are worried about their batting," highlighting the emphasis on strengthening the lower order.

Washington Sundar certainly justified the selectors' faith, delivering an outstanding performance with the ball, claiming seven wickets and helping to dismiss New Zealand for just 259 runs.

During the New Zealand innings, Gavaskar also made an interesting observation regarding field placements. Some viewers speculated his comments were directed at captain Rohit Sharma, but Gavaskar clarified he was discussing fielding strategies. "If you had fielders like that – long-on and long-off – for the spinners before a lofted shot had been played, the captain would've been called a defensive captain. Here, now you try and block the boundaries," he explained, indicating the tactical approach taken.

At the close of play, India ended Day 1 at 16/1, with Shubman Gill (10*) and Yashasvi Jaiswal (6*) remaining unbeaten at the crease.

The third session began with New Zealand resuming their innings at 201/5. Daryl Mitchell (16*) was at the crease alongside Glenn Phillips. However, the pair could only manage three runs before Mitchell was dismissed for 18 runs. Subsequently, Phillips fell for 9, followed by Tim Southee, who contributed just five runs, and Ajaz Patel, who was bowled by Sundar.

New Zealand's innings concluded at 259, with Mitchell Santner the last to be dismissed for 33 runs, which included three fours and two sixes. India's strong position sets the stage for a critical second day as they look to capitalize on their bowling success.
