In the ongoing Kolkata hospital rape-murder case, the Supreme Court’s fresh scrutiny has significantly intensified the BJP's demand for the resignation of Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal. The court's focus on alleged lapses in the police investigation, including a missing postmortem challan and the 14-hour delay in filing the First Information Report (FIR), has fueled calls for accountability. The Chief Justice of India, DY Chandrachud, emphasized the importance of the challan, which details the items submitted for forensic examination, as crucial to the postmortem process.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has responded by playing for time, arguing that the police chief cannot step down immediately due to the upcoming Durga Puja, which requires heightened law and order measures. Banerjee mentioned that Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal had offered his resignation multiple times but emphasized the need for his presence during the festive period.

The arrest of Sandip Ghose, former Principal of RG Kar Medical College, has added to the controversy, with opposition parties and protesters demanding the police chief's resignation. Allegations have emerged that the police pressured the victim's family into cremating the body prematurely and offered a bribe to cover up the incident. The CBI has flagged the role of police in the investigation and is now questioning who collected the forensic samples, adding another layer of scrutiny to this high-profile case.
