- NarendraModi, BRICSSummit
At the BRICS Summit in Kazan, Russia, Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian to address escalating tensions in West Asia, particularly in light of ongoing conflicts involving Israel and Iran. India has voiced its "deep concern" over the situation, emphasizing the importance of dialogue and diplomacy to mitigate the crisis.
The meeting took place against the backdrop of the year-long Israel-Hamas war and heightened threats between Israel and Iran, following recent missile attacks. Pezeshkian highlighted India's potential role in fostering peace, given its strong relations with all parties involved.
In addition to discussing regional stability, Modi and Pezeshkian focused on enhancing India-Iran bilateral relations, particularly strategic projects like the Chabahar Port and the International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC). Modi expressed India's commitment to supporting peace in the region and protecting civilians.
Both leaders acknowledged the historical ties between India and Iran and committed to collaborating in various international forums, including the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) and BRICS, where Iran has recently joined.
The meeting concluded with Modi inviting Pezeshkian to visit India, which the Iranian President accepted, marking a significant step in strengthening ties between the two nations.
