A dense fog blanket has gripped Delhi and parts of North India, causing severe disruptions in daily life. The dense fog has reduced visibility to near zero, particularly affecting flight and train operations. At Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport, 202 flights were delayed as visibility dropped significantly. The fog has also caused delays in train services, with over 24 trains, including major routes like the Ayodhya Express and Gorakhdham Express, running late.
The weather conditions are accompanied by a cold wave, with Delhi experiencing its fifth consecutive cold day. The city recorded a maximum temperature of 16°C, which is 3°C below normal, and a minimum of 7.6°C. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted that dense fog will continue until January 8, with light rain expected on January 6.
In addition, Delhi's air quality is dangerously poor, with an AQI of 309, classified as "Very Poor" by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB). The poor air quality and cold conditions have led to the suspension of school classes in Gautam Buddh Nagar until further notice.
Passengers traveling by air or train in Delhi and nearby cities like Amritsar, Lucknow, and Guwahati are advised to check schedules regularly, as the persistent fog may lead to further cancellations and delays. The IMD has issued fog warnings for several other regions in North India, including Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, and Himachal Pradesh, while light rain and snow are expected in parts of Himachal Pradesh and Ladakh.
This extreme weather event is expected to continue impacting daily activities and transportation until the middle of January, urging people to take necessary precautions.
