Maharashtra Reports First Death from Guillain-Barre Syndrome, Pune on High Alert

  1. First Death in Maharashtra Due to Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS):
    • Maharashtra has reported its first death due to Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS), a rare neurological disorder.
    • The victim, a Pune-based Chartered Accountant, had been suffering from diarrhoea for several days before developing muscle weakness, which later progressed to difficulty breathing. He ultimately succumbed to the condition. 
  2. Increase in GBS Cases in Pune:
    • Pune has reported a total of 101 confirmed cases of Guillain-Barre Syndrome, raising concerns among local health authorities.
    • The Pune Municipal Corporation has heightened its alert status and implemented measures to control the spread of the disease.
  3. What is Guillain-Barre Syndrome?
    • Guillain-Barre Syndrome is an immunological nerve disorder where the body's immune system attacks the peripheral nerves.
    • It results in sudden muscle weakness, tingling, and numbness, which can lead to paralysis in severe cases. 
  4. Water Contamination Identified as Possible Cause:
    • Water contamination has been flagged as a potential cause for the recent spike in GBS cases in Pune.
    • The state health department has issued an advisory urging citizens to only drink boiled water, avoid eating in open areas, and refrain from consuming stale food.
  5. Preventive Measures and Health Advisory:
    • To reduce the risk of contracting GBS, citizens are advised to:
      • Drink boiled water.
      • Wash fruits and vegetables thoroughly before consumption.
      • Practice good hygiene, including regular handwashing.
      • Avoid eating in unclean or open food areas. 
  6. Recognizing the Symptoms of Guillain-Barre Syndrome:
    • Symptoms typically begin after a respiratory or digestive tract infection. They include:
      • Weakness and tingling in the feet and legs.
      • Unsteady walking and difficulty climbing stairs.
      • Double vision and rapid heart rate.
      • Severe cramping and a "pins and needles" sensation in hands and feet.
      • Low blood pressure.
    • In some cases, these symptoms can progress to muscle paralysis.
  7. Complications of Guillain-Barre Syndrome:
    • Besides paralysis, Guillain-Barre Syndrome can cause additional complications, including:
      • Difficulty breathing and heart-related issues.
      • Pain and blood clots.
      • Impaired bowel or bladder function. 
  8. Health Authorities Taking Action:
    • In response to the rising number of cases, local health officials in Pune are actively surveying homes in affected areas, collecting water samples, and interviewing residents.
    • Immediate medical treatment is recommended for anyone showing symptoms of GBS, as severe cases require hospitalization and intensive care.
  9. Urgency of Immediate Treatment:
    • Guillain-Barre Syndrome is a medical emergency and requires prompt diagnosis and treatment.
    • People showing symptoms should seek medical help immediately, as early treatment can prevent further complications and improve recovery outcome.
