A major uproar occurred in the Rajya Sabha on December 5 after a bundle of cash was discovered in the seat of Congress MP Abhishek Manu Singhvi. The Vice President of India, Jagdeep Dhankhar, informed the House that the cash was found by security officials during an anti-sabotage check after the House was adjourned the previous day.
Mr. Dhankhar stated that the money was found in seat number 222, which is currently allocated to Singhvi, who represents Telangana. The incident has sparked an investigation, but Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge expressed concern over the MP's name being disclosed publicly during the probe, suggesting that the Chair should have refrained from naming Singhvi.
In response, Abhishek Manu Singhvi clarified that this was the first time he had heard of such an incident. He explained that he only carries ₹500 to the Rajya Sabha and provided a detailed account of his movements the previous day. He stated that he spent only three minutes in the House before it rose and another 30 minutes in the canteen, calling the controversy "bizarre" and a needless attempt at political drama.
Singhvi suggested that there should be better security measures in place, such as locking individual seats, to prevent such incidents and avoid allegations. The controversy ignited strong reactions from both the treasury and opposition benches, with BJP leader JP Nadda calling the incident an "insult" to the integrity of the Rajya Sabha.
