The political landscape of West Bengal has been rocked by a renewed focus on the Sandeshkhali region, with Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee exchanging sharp statements regarding the controversial island. Sandeshkhali had been in the news earlier this year during the Lok Sabha elections, where the BJP highlighted allegations of land grab and exploitation of women. In response to these claims, Mamata Banerjee dismissed them as false, pointing to a financial scheme at play in the area. Suvendu Adhikari, who once served as Mamata Banerjee's close aide before joining the BJP, fired back by threatening an investigation into the Sandeshkhali incident if a BJP government were to form, while also vowing to take action against those responsible for imprisoning women in what he called false cases.

The Trinamool Congress held its ground in the Basirhat Lok Sabha seat despite the controversy, but with the upcoming Basirhat bye-election, Sandeshkhali is likely to be a central issue once again. Mamata Banerjee, in an effort to secure women voters, warned them not to fall prey to misleading tactics and reiterated that the allegations against her party were based on lies. As the political battle heats up, the Sandeshkhali issue continues to play a prominent role in the fierce rivalry between the BJP and TMC in West Bengal.
