Between April and November 2024, the Indian government dispersed Rs 3.08 lakh crore in income tax refunds, reflecting a significant 46% increase compared to the same period last year. As of November 22, about 98.35% of Income Tax Returns (ITRs) filed have been e-verified, with a record-breaking 69.93 lakh ITRs submitted on a single day, July 31. The total number of ITRs filed by November 22 stands at 8.50 crore, a 7.32% increase from the previous year.

The introduction of innovations such as TIN 2.0, the new income tax e-filing portal launched in July 2022, and features like pre-filled ITRs and updated returns has streamlined the filing process. These updates led to the submission of 47.52 lakh updated returns during the period.

The government's focus on improving efficiency is reflected in the processing of over 1.62 crore income tax returns in a single day during fiscal 2025. Additionally, approximately 21% of ITRs were processed on the same day they were filed, and 26.35% were processed within a week, marking an improvement over the previous fiscal year.

Between January 1 and October 13, over 1.3 lakh demands worth Rs 5 lakh crore were successfully reduced or resolved through the demand management facilitation center, which operates with 170 agents working six days a week.

To further assist taxpayers, the department launched an awareness campaign to help taxpayers complete Schedule Foreign Assets (Schedule FA) and report foreign income (Schedule FSI) accurately in their ITRs. These efforts aim to enhance data transparency and ensure accurate tax filings.
