Indian wrestling champion Vinesh Phogat has made a surprising decision to retire from the sport, following her disqualification from the Paris Olympics 2024 wrestling final.

Phogat shared her decision on social media, expressing her profound disappointment and announcing her retirement with a heartfelt message: “Motherly wrestling won over me. I lost. I’m sorry. Your dream and my courage are broken. I no longer have the strength to fight. I will forever be indebted to you all.” Despite reaching the final in Paris, Phogat was disqualified due to exceeding the weight limit. In response, she sought justice from the Court of Arbitration for Sport, arguing that she deserves the silver medal. The arbitration process is still ongoing.

Support for Phogat remains strong despite her disqualification. Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini voiced his admiration for the wrestler, stating, “You are our champion. You are honored not just in Haryana but throughout the nation. Phogat’s impact on Indian sports is immense. She serves as an inspiration for young athletes. Even though she was disqualified, she will be held in the same high regard as those who won medals
