Reddy claimed that the flood was a man-made disaster caused by the opening of gates on the Budameru canal without prior warning to residents. This statement has been widely criticized for its inaccuracy, as the Budameru canal, a rivulet affected by encroachments and inadequate diversion systems, does not have any gates.
