- Champions Trophy 2025, BCCI, Rohit Sharma
As the 2025 Champions Trophy approaches, the Indian cricket team's participation remains surrounded by uncertainty, particularly over the issue of the opening ceremony and jersey logos. The tournament, set to take place from February 19 to March 9, will be held in Pakistan, but India’s participation has seen significant changes after the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) refused to send its team to Pakistan. As a compromise, India will play its matches in Dubai, while Pakistan will play in neutral venues during future ICC events held in India.
BCCI’s new secretary, Devajit Saikia, addressed concerns regarding India’s team jersey and travel plans for the tournament. He confirmed that India will adhere to all ICC uniform-related rules for the Champions Trophy 2025. However, when asked about the potential participation of Rohit Sharma at the opening ceremony and ICC media engagements in Pakistan, Saikia revealed that a final decision had not yet been made.
The situation has caused ripples in Pakistan, with former cricketer Basit Ali advising the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to avoid creating unnecessary drama. He suggested that the PCB should simply lodge a formal protest over the absence of the Pakistan logo on India's jerseys and any potential absence of Rohit Sharma from the opening ceremony. Ali also offered a counter-scenario, pointing out that Pakistan could respond similarly when the 2026 T20 World Cup is held in India, should the situation escalate.
Despite the ongoing discussions, the Champions Trophy 2025 is still set to be a highly anticipated event, with both India and Pakistan navigating a complex diplomatic and cricketing landscape. The tournament will run from February 19 to March 9, with both teams eager to showcase their talents on the global stage.
