- Brian Thompson, UnitedHealthcare CEO, New York shooting, CEO murder
Brian Thompson, the CEO of US-based UnitedHealthcare, was fatally shot outside the New York Hilton Midtown hotel on Wednesday morning. Thompson, 50, was walking toward the hotel to deliver a keynote address at an investor conference when a gunman ambushed him. Surveillance footage captured the suspect, a white male wearing a hooded jacket and a black mask, approaching Thompson from behind and firing several shots with a semi-automatic handgun fitted with a silencer.
Thompson was struck in the back and leg, causing him to stagger and collapse. Despite the firearm jamming multiple times, the attacker managed to clear it and continued firing until Thompson was incapacitated. The suspect then calmly walked away and fled the scene on an electric bike. Officers arrived shortly after the shooting, finding Thompson critically injured. He was rushed to the hospital but was later pronounced dead.
Surveillance footage revealed that the suspect had been loitering in the area for several minutes before the attack, blending in with commuters. The gunman had also been seen earlier at a nearby Starbucks. Investigators are analyzing items found near the scene, including a discarded water bottle and a phone, to help identify the suspect.
UnitedHealth Group, the parent company of UnitedHealthcare, expressed shock and sadness over Thompson’s death. His wife, Paulette, described the attack as "senseless" and revealed that her husband had received threats in the past. The NYPD is offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to the capture of the suspect, described as a white male in his 30s or 40s with a gray backpack and black-and-white sneakers.
