Spiritual tourism in India has been on the rise, with an increasing number of travelers seeking personal growth, adventure, and spiritual experiences. Atlys, a visa processing platform, reports a 21.4% increase in inbound travel to India for spiritual purposes, showing global fascination with the country’s rich spiritual heritage.
The journey for self-discovery and spirituality has become more popular among millennials, especially women. Women make up 66% of millennial spiritual travelers, and there has been a 35% increase in group travels. Major spiritual events like the Mahakumbh continue to drive this interest, with approximately 48% of all spiritual travel visa applications linked to such events. These sacred festivals, including the Mahakumbh, attract millions of pilgrims, with the Mahakumbh alone bringing about 42 million visitors from around the world.
The cities of Varanasi, Rishikesh, and Haridwar remain top spiritual destinations. According to Mohak Nahta, CEO of Atlys, the blend of spiritual experiences with adventure has become a key appeal for international travelers, especially from the UK and the US.
India's spiritual tourism is no longer limited to traditional pilgrims; it now attracts those looking for deeper, more meaningful experiences, making these sacred festivals and pilgrimages increasingly popular on the global stage.
