- Guillain-Barre Syndrome, GBS Maharashtra
Maharashtra has recently observed an increase in cases of Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS), a rare neurological disorder where the immune system attacks the peripheral nervous system. This condition can cause symptoms such as muscle weakness, numbness, and in severe cases, paralysis. The state health department has reported 110 suspected GBS cases, with one death and eight confirmed diagnoses so far. The majority of these cases are from Pune, with others reported in Pimpri Chinchwad and various districts.
Dr. Priyanka Sehrawat, a neurologist, has highlighted gastroenteritis caused by the C. jejuni bacteria as a significant trigger for GBS, urging the public to be cautious. While many factors contribute to GBS, C. jejuni infections can be avoided by maintaining proper hygiene, particularly with food and water consumption.
The Maharashtra government has assured the public not to panic and advised visiting a government hospital if any symptoms of GBS appear. Additionally, preventive measures like eating safely, improving immunity, and ensuring proper food hygiene are recommended.
GBS often follows infections like viral illnesses, and early treatment is crucial. Dr. Sehrawat emphasized that the condition can be managed effectively if treated within two weeks, urging people to stay alert but not fearful.
Symptoms of Guillain-Barre Syndrome include:
- Weakness
- Sensation changes
- Difficulty with eye muscles, swallowing, and speech
- Pins and needles in the hands and feet
- Severe pain, especially at night
- Coordination and balance issues
- Abnormal heart rate or blood pressure
- Problems with digestion and bladder control
Dietary Tips to Prevent GBS (as per Dr. Priyanka Sehrawat):
- Avoid eating out or consuming contaminated food and water.
- Wash fruits and vegetables thoroughly.
- Increase vitamin C-rich foods.
- Avoid long-stored foods like paneer, cheese, and rice to reduce bacterial growth risks.
The rising cases of GBS serve as a reminder to follow safety precautions and seek medical advice if symptoms appear.
