A severe storm system swept across the Southern United States, producing multiple tornadoes and killing four people. The storms caused widespread damage, downing trees and power lines, and damaging homes.

 

Confirmed Tornadoes

 

The National Weather Service confirmed over two dozen preliminary and confirmed tornadoes across Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Georgia. The strongest tornadoes were reported in Texas, with winds reaching up to 136 mph.

 

Damage and Response

 

The storms caused significant damage, with over 10,200 flights delayed and nearly 500 canceled. Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick deployed over 300 responders and 180 assets to support the state's storm response.

 

Unusual Weather Pattern

 

The severe weather was caused by a rare December warmth clashing with cold air. The unusual weather pattern is expected to continue, with high temperatures in parts of Texas potentially reaching the 90-degree mark early in the week.

Severe weather conditions are expected to persist in the southeastern United States, with multiple tornadoes already reported in southeastern Texas ¹. The National Weather Service has issued various warnings, including a High Wind Warning, Storm Warning, and Flood Warning, for several states in the region ².

 

Tornado Watch and Severe Thunderstorm Watch

 

A Tornado Watch has been issued for all of Southeast Texas and parts of western Louisiana, while a Severe Thunderstorm Watch has been issued for northeastern Texas, northwestern Louisiana, and southwestern Arkansas ¹.

 

Hurricane Debby

 

Additionally, Hurricane Debby is expected to bring "potentially historic rainfall" to Georgia and South Carolina, with totals as high as 30 inches possible along the coasts ³. A state of emergency has been declared in both Georgia and South Carolina ahead of the storm's expected impact.
