In a significant administrative decision, the central government has denied GHMC Commissioner Amrapali Kata's request to remain in the Telangana cadre. A 2010-batch IAS officer, Amrapali was originally assigned to the Andhra Pradesh cadre during the bifurcation of the state. The Ministry has now directed her to report to the Andhra cadre, dismissing her plea to be recognized as a Telangana-native officer.

The decision is rooted in the recommendations of the Khandekar Committee, which was established to allocate civil service officers following the division of the state. While the committee adhered to established rules during the allocation process, many officers expressed their dissatisfaction, leading to objections filed with the Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT). Several of these officers claimed to have ties to Telangana, despite their assignments to Andhra Pradesh.

Amrapali's situation mirrors that of Somesh Kumar, who was previously serving as Telangana’s Chief Secretary and was directed by the court to report to Andhra Pradesh, ultimately leading to his resignation. Now, Amrapali faces a similar predicament as she is required to leave her post in Hyderabad and join the Andhra Pradesh cadre.

Amrapali had listed Visakhapatnam as her permanent address, which led to her assignment to Andhra Pradesh by the Pratyush Sinha Committee, in accordance with the Khandekar Committee's guidelines. Despite her efforts to appeal for reassignment to Telangana, the High Court upheld the decisions of both committees, leaving her with no further legal recourse. Consequently, Amrapali is expected to be relieved of her duties in Telangana and report to Andhra Pradesh shortly.
