The Andhra Pradesh High Court has raised concerns over the whereabouts of seven social media activists affiliated with the YSR Congress party who were reportedly arrested by the police for posting abusive messages against political rivals. The court admitted arguments on six habeas corpus petitions filed by the activists' family members and requested CCTV footage from the relevant police stations to determine the activists' status between November 4 and November 7.
The state's Advocate General informed the court that the activists had been released after questioning and receiving further interrogation notices. However, the court questioned the lack of evidence supporting their release and expressed surprise at the number of habeas corpus petitions filed within a short period, raising doubts about law enforcement practices in the state.
Family members of the detained activists alleged mistreatment, physical assault, and denial of food during their detention, prompting the court to demand a detailed report from the government by the following Monday. The YSR Congress party stated that over 100 cases have been filed against social media activists in Andhra Pradesh, with concerns over prolonged detention without proper legal procedures.
The high court's intervention highlights the seriousness of the situation and emphasizes the need to address potential human rights violations in detention practices. The case underscores the importance of upholding legal standards and protecting the rights of individuals, even in the context of social media activism and political discourse.
