- One Nation One Election, simultaneous elections, Lok Sabha elections
The long-debated concept of "One Nation, One Election" has taken a significant step forward as the central cabinet, under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved the proposal for simultaneous elections across India. The government plans to introduce a bill in the ongoing winter session of Parliament to implement the plan.
The proposal has sparked differing opinions among political parties. While over 30 parties support the idea, Congress has raised concerns about the practicality of simultaneous elections in a diverse democracy like India. They argue that elections should be conducted as per regional needs, ensuring a better-functioning democracy.
A report by a committee headed by former President Ram Nath Kovind had previously outlined a two-stage plan for conducting elections. This plan suggests first holding the Lok Sabha and state assembly elections together, followed by local body elections within 100 days.
To address the varying opinions, the government plans to hold wide consultations, including talks with state legislative assembly speakers and political representatives. The bill may also be referred to a Joint Parliamentary Committee for further deliberations.
As discussions continue, the final decisions regarding the simultaneous elections bill will likely emerge from the winter session of Parliament.
