Rajya Sabha MP Priyanka Chaturvedi has spoken out on the issue of grooming gangs in the UK, stating that the blame cannot be placed on Asia as a whole but rather on "one rogue nation"—Pakistan. This statement was endorsed by SpaceX and Tesla CEO Elon Musk, who called her assertion "true."
Chaturvedi’s comments came amid growing tensions in the UK, where the opposition Conservative party called for a new national inquiry into the widespread sexual abuse of white British girls by men primarily of Pakistani origin. These incidents have occurred in various northern English towns over several decades, and the issue has sparked intense political debate. The debate intensified following comments from UK Labour Party leader Keir Starmer, who previously served as head of the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) between 2008 and 2013. Starmer claimed responsibility for initiating the first prosecution of an Asian grooming gang, a statement that has attracted both support and criticism.
In response to the inquiry calls, Starmer has rejected the idea of a new inquiry, arguing that focus should instead be on implementing recommendations from a comprehensive seven-year inquiry that already addressed the issue with specific measures. He also faced attacks from Elon Musk, who joined in criticizing Starmer's stance.
The controversy surrounding grooming gangs comes as the UK Parliament also focuses on the Children's Wellbeing and Schools Bill, which includes measures for keeping track of children not in school to ensure their safety. The bill follows the tragic case of 10-year-old Sara Sharif, a British-Pakistani girl whose death in August 2023 was ruled a murder after being subjected to years of abuse. Her father and stepmother were convicted of her murder last month.
The UK’s Parliament continues to progress the children’s bill without the need for a formal vote, signaling a focus on child protection issues alongside the ongoing debate on grooming gangs.
