At the teaser launch of his much-anticipated film L2: Empuraan, Prithviraj Sukumaran revealed an exciting piece of cinematic history: he was once approached to direct Tamil superstar Rajinikanth in a film. The actor-director shared how A. Subaskaran, the head of Lyca Productions, reached out to him with an offer to direct a project starring Rajinikanth. However, despite the incredible opportunity for a new director like him, Prithviraj couldn’t come up with the script on time, leading to the film not taking off.

Prithviraj explained that he tried his best to develop a concept, but due to his part-time directorial status, he wasn’t able to deliver a script within the tight timeline that Subaskaran had in mind. While the project didn’t materialize, it led to the creation of a lasting friendship between Prithviraj and Subaskaran.

The connection further blossomed when Prithviraj told Subaskaran about his upcoming project, the sequel to his 2019 directorial debut Lucifer. He shared a rough outline of the story, and to his surprise, Subaskaran offered his support, asking how he could be part of Prithviraj’s dream. Prithviraj expressed deep gratitude for the producer's involvement and encouragement.

The event, where the teaser of L2: Empuraan was launched, was attended by some of the biggest names in the Malayalam film industry, including Mammootty, Manju Warrier, Tovino Thomas, and Basil Joseph. The film, which stars Mohanlal, is set to release on March 27, 2025.
